PERIODS MADE EASY----- BY MEGHA

Menstruation is something women experiences every month. Over half of the women who menstruate experiences period pain (dysmenorrhea). And yes, I know even though we experience it every month, menstrual cramps and discomfort doesn't get any better😐Now, what we can do to ease the pain? Here are some tips and ways in which you can get rid of those painful 5 days.

1. SKIP THE CAFFEINE

Early morning coffee does give you that kick start for the day. But when you menstruate avoid having caffeine, it will help you relieve menstrual pain. Caffeine constricts your blood vessels causing uterine contraction hence, more cramps. Instead, try smoothies loaded with antioxidant-rich greens. The nutrients will give you the needed "pick me up" energy to survive the day.

2. DRINK MORE WATER

Hydration is the key. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day when you are on your periods or even otherwise. This may help you ease bloating which many women face while menstruating. Also drinking hot water can increase your blood flow throughout your body and relax your muscles. Hence, fewer cramps.

3. EATING HEALTHY

This is difficult to follow especially during periods when you have all those cravings to eat sugary, fatty, and salty food. It is seen that some women find eating the right kind of foods may help ease menstrual pain. Introduce anti-inflammatory foods like cherries, tomatoes in your diet. Eat more calcium-rich beans, green leafy vegetables, almonds, etc. It's best to eat a healthy, balanced diet every day and not only in these few days as this will also keep your hormones in check. Eat dark chocolates during your periods, trust me it will lift your mood and help with your mood swings.

4. STRETCH THOSE LIMBS

You must be thinking that already it is difficult to get out of bed during periods and I am telling you to exercise. Relax I am not suggesting you go for a run or something. But it is advised to practice yoga during menstruation as it will help to relax your muscles hence, cure cramps.

5. APPLY HEAT

A little heat can help your muscles relax, improve blood circulation and relieve tension. Try sitting with a heating pad , taking a hot shower or relaxing in a hot bath.

6. ACUPUNCTURE AND ACUPRESSURE

Still not able to get relief from period cramps? Try acupuncture and acupressure. I recently got to know about this eastern technique and believe me it works. Applying pressure to key points on the back, abdomen, and the fleshy part between your thumb(as shown in the picture) can be an effective pain treatment. You can also use essential oils to massage these key points to relieve cramps.

7. HOMEMADE HERBAL TEA

Sipping herbal tea is another effective and easy way to get rid of menstrual cramps. Herbal tea is anti inflammatory which helps to relax your muscles and also calm your nerves. It also helps to get rid of that bloated stomach which most of us face during periods. Some of the herbal teas are--

A. GREEN TEA
B. TURMERIC TEA
C. GINGER TEA
D. CHAMOMILE TEA
E. FENNEL TEA
